Glorious beaches abound in the South Pacific. But each destination has its own identity, its unique flavours of paradise. From romantic weddings on a secluded beach to family holidays with safe swimming lagoons, we can recommend which is the best location for your holiday. However, the one asset the South Pacific lacks in its beaches are good waves. Most islands are protected by fringing reefs with shallow lagoons full of corals and marine life. The beaches are lapped gently by the incoming tide but seldom do you find beaches with good waves for frolicking or body surfing.

Fiji is the most popular tourist destination in the South Pacific for both holidaymakers and backpackers and overall has the best beaches in the South Pacific. Not only does it have a wide choice of five star resorts with spa treatments and all the water activities imaginable catering for families, but here you'll find some of the best small boutique beach resorts in the world in secluded locations where the beaches offer absolute privacy. With over 300 islands, there is also an extensive network of budget resorts in off the beaten track locations. There are also lots of day cruises to visit small uninhabited islands.

The Cook Islands has far fewer beach options as there are only two islands which attract tourists, and neither are large islands. Having said that, both Rarotonga and Aitutaki make excellent beach holiday destinations for they both have a really laid back atmosphere, picturesque beaches around the coast and lost of beach bungalows to choose from. However, snorkelling and other water activities are rather limited and the focus here is on exploring the small boutique shops and dining out. Aitutaki has lots of tiny islets surrounding the lagoon which have some of the most picturesque beaches in the region

Tahiti also has many uninhabited islets surrounding lagoons with picture-postcard beaches, some of which boast luxury resorts with overwater bungalows in the turquoise lagoons. Others can be visited from larger islands on day picnics. In all, there are over a thousand islands in French Polynesia so its not difficult to find outstanding beaches. The main tourist destinations of Tahiti and Moorea have only a few nice beach settings although both have good surfing and diving - the best beaches where commercial tourism thrives is on Bora Bora island where fine white sand beaches are set to the backdrop of the towering rugged mountains of Bora Island.

Some of the most scenic beaches with fantastic coastal views and mountain backdrops can be found on Samoa which like the Cook Islands has only two main islands with tourism but both are large islands. However, tourism in Samoa is very low key with just a couple of beach resorts but there are lots of budget beach fales for backpackes.

The handful of beach resorts in Tonga offer some of the best beaches and best value for money. Here you'll find lots of gorgeous beaches on small islands as well as excellent snorkelling, fantastic sightseeing around waterways and sailing cruises to uninhabited islands with the added attraction of spotting humpback whales between May and October.
